For those unfamiliar with the term, a memento mori (Latin for 'remember that you will die') is a popular artistic convention used throughout art history for illustrating the fleeting nature of life and the inevitability of death. It always fascinated me during my undergrad days (because let's face it, when you're young you tend to think that death doesn't apply to you), and now that Halloween is finally here, it couldn't feel more appropriate.

So enjoy this ghoulish holiday and all its macabre charm, but do not go gentle into that good night we have a lot of living left to do, and I for one plan on celebrating that fact with a fist-full of mini chocolates. xx

{Halloween Week} Studded Cat Ears

 photo CatEarsHeadband_zps463ae8ac.jpg
This week's Halloween-inspired Wardrobe Wednesday is all about the cat ears... More specifically, this studded cat ear headband that I picked up on a whim at Forever 21 many moons ago. Naturally I had no use for it until this very week, but it's precisely that kind of dedication towards "rainy day shopping" (aka- The I may need this someday approach) that keeps this blog populated with content, but that's an issue for another day.

Not only can this headband (coupled with this makeup tutorial) save the day during a particularly busy Halloween season (testify!), but it's pretty darn cute draped over mirrors and side tables (how I justify frivolous purchases). If you're looking for a last minute costume, look no further, and if you feel like getting your craft-on, check out this easy DIY Happy Halloween Eve!

{Halloween Week} Painted Pumpkins

Why carve a pumpkin when you can paint one instead? Not to sound all 'easy way out' or anything, but painted pumpkins are not only easier than their carved counterparts, but they're oh-so pretty as well... That's why Kassie, Ashley and I decided to have a mini painting party over the weekend. There were cupcakes, pastel paints aplenty and the Monster Mash, of course. The only thing that could have made this day any better would be a screening of Ghostbusters and some Tootsie Rolls, but you can't have everything.

Happy Halloween Week! xx

Hello and welcome to another theme week! First up in our Halloween lineup is this witchy, goth-inspired dress from Edmonton label Suka Clothing. I've had it hiding in my closet for over a year now, but didn't have occasion to wear it until now. Something about the print and midriff cut-outs really spoke to me, especially when planning a Halloween-inspired look to kick off the week. And when paired with this Kenzo-esque eye clutch, pointy booties and skull necklace, I'd say the witching hour is officially here. xx

{Flashback} The Ghost of Halloween Past

In anticipation of this week's themed content, I wanted to throw back to one of my favourite posts of all-time An Enchanted Walk, shot with my girl Kastles last Halloween. All I remember was being excited and extremely cold as we hiked down a ravine with Mr. AiF to shoot... but boy was it was worth it.

Check in tomorrow for the kick off of Halloween Week I have lots of fun outfit posts, editorials and pumpkin-decorating goodness in store. xx

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of shooting with my friend and fellow blogger, Miss Sarah Chan. She's pretty much the cutest thing ever (right?!) and she makes riding a bike look oh-so good... And can we just talk about the fact that homegirl can cycle in heels? Because I think that deserves an award of some kind, but I digress.

We met for chai, loaded up the bikes with some cute bits and bobs (a big thank you to RedBike for letting me borrow this beautiful Pashley Sonnet Bliss!) and set out on a photo adventure with the help of our pal Jerry. There were laughs, leaf tossing (which is harder than it looks, let me tell you) and Gossip Girl references made on school steps. And for the record, you CAN eat yogurt on the steps with us at lunch we're nice like that. xx

{WW} Colour-Block Booties

 photo ColourBlockBooties_zps6ffbd300.jpg

Always down for a good colour-blocking session, these Sam Edelman booties had me at white heel. And cobalt. Oh, and suede... soft, supple suede. Basically what I'm trying to say is these badboys were a no-brainer. The moment I saw them I was as good as sold, although it did take me a few weeks to justify yet another pair of booties but hey, the heart wants what it wants.

{DIY} Easy Statement Earrings

 photo statementearringdiy_zps377f25a9.jpg
I was craving an easy DIY this weekend, so I decided to whip out my trusty Shrinky Dinks and try my hand at a simple, lucite-inspired statement earring. I have a hard time wearing larger earrings because I find them too heavy and taxing on my lobes, so this fun, lightweight solution really appealed to me. Read on for instructions!

 photo StatementEarringsDIY_zps47707792.jpg

 Supplies:
  • Shrinky Dinks (available at any craft store)
  • Scissors
  • Holepunch
  • Paper + pen
  • Jewelry glue
  • Decorative gems
  • Jump rings + earring hooks
 Instructions:

1. Trace your shape onto a Shrinky Dinks sheet, making it three times larger than your desired end result.
2. Cut out the shape, taking care to even out the edges.
3. Punch a small hole into the top of your shape, then bake the shapes according to the instructions on the Shrinky Dinks package.
4. Once cooled, start gluing decorative gems and pearls onto the surface of the earrings.
5. Secure the earring hooks to the base with a jump ring.
6. Give yourself a pat on the back you're done!
